About the Scholarship
The Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1998 by the family of Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne. Dr. Osborne was a longtime family physician and surgeon who served the residents of Ironton, Ohio, and the surrounding community for over 30 years until his passing in 1985. Dr. Osborne’s wife, Virginia, worked with her husband at his doctor’s office on 6th and Pine Streets in Ironton during the last few years of his practice. They were married for 36 years and raised three children.
Scholarships are provided to outstanding seniors from each graduating class at Ironton High School and St. Joseph High School. The scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement. Both scholarships are one-time awards that are presented at the annual commencement ceremonies of the respective high schools. Starting in 2025, the scholarship was awarded to winners at Ironton High School and expanded to St. Joseph High School. The scholarship amount for each school in 2026 will be $5,000.
The first memorial scholarships were awarded at Ironton High School in 1999 and at St. Joseph High School in 2025. It is the intention of the Osborne family to continue to award the scholarship annually to deserving Ironton High School and St. Joseph High School graduates. Thanks to the generous contributions that the scholarship fund has received since its inception, the Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship financial outlook is strong. Our list of past award winners is truly outstanding and the Osborne family is grateful for the opportunity to support the advancement of Ironton students through the scholarship award.
